Great new beers on tap:
Big Boss Hells Belle- Pours a cloudy golden with a big white head. Aromas are fruity with sweet candied oranges and lemonade. A touch of funky Belgian yeastiness. Flavors are sweet with candi sugar, candied fruits, and the like; but an unyielding surge of chalky dryness finishes the deal. Sweet and dry are balanced well. A good drinker.
Highland Tasgall Scotch Ale-On August 18 2007, Highland Brewing Company became the first North Carolina brewery to obtain approval to market a high-alcohol brew. (Previously, the alcohol cap on malt beverages sold in the state was 6%.) This Scotch-style ale, named from Norse mythology, combines the heritage and tartan of their brew team. The roasted barley and chocolate malt lend a bold flavor to this delicious dark beer. Its increased hop level is a modest departure from a true Scotch-style ale.
New Holland Dragons Milk- This strong ale was aged in oak for 120 days which contributes to its bourbon flavor. This beer pours a rich black with and full dark brown head. The aroma is stout like with roasted malts. At first sip you are blasted with a malty goodness, sticky sweetness then some light touches of vanilla and buttery oak.
Great new beers in bottle:
Left Hand Fade to Black-Pours black with licorice, espresso bean, molasses, and black cardamom notes that give way to a feeling of self loathing, burnt opportunities, and smoked relationships.
Ska Modus Hoperandi- This IPA pours a deep orange color with a thick frothy head that leaves great lacing. A grapefruit and pinecone smell dominate the aroma. This beer is definitely hoppy - lots of citrus, but it is well balanced by the caramel malts that come out after the initial hop burst. Medium-bodied with an abv of 6.8%, this beer could be considered sessionable for hopheads.
Thirsty Dog Siberian Night -This rich Imperial Stout pours a pitch black with a thin, light brown head. Ample amounts of dark chocolate, coffee and a hint of licorice give this beer an intense aroma and taste. Finishes with the lingering flavor of bittersweet chocolate and warming alcohol. 9.70 ABV. $$$
