On Tap- Anchor Brewing Company San Francisco, California
Our Special Ale 2008 ??% ABV serving: pint $5
This top secret recipe is known only to the brewers at Anchor, one of the classic American breweries that got this craft beer movement rolling. Wouldn't you like to crawl into the bottle for a long winter's nap? Gingerbread, peppermint, clove, deliciousness are words that come to mind... Every year this recipe changes, so make sure to try it while it lasts!
Breckenridge Brewing Company Denver, Colorado
Christmas 7.4% ABV serving: pint $5.5
This seasonal Christmas ale is a Strong Ale. This is a dark brew that is warm and rich with hints of caramel and chocolate. This beer has extra flavor and strength at 7.4% abv. Unlike most traditional winter warmers, the good folk at Breckenridge Brewing use no additional spices in this seasonal ale, just hops. While you quaff, sip and ponder the complex and delicate flavors and aromas of nutmeg, cinnamon, clove, pine and know that those are the flavors and aromas of skillfully used hops in an artfuly crafted holiday brew. This is Rob (our resident beer guru)'s favorite holiday beer!
Oskar Blues Brewing Company Lyons, Colorado
Ten Fidy 10.0% ABV serving: snifter $5.5
This Russian Imperial Stout pours a jet black topped with a full, thick tan head. The aroma is a faint coffee, sweet malts, chocolate, and a subtle fruitiness suggesting black currant, plum, or fig. A well roasted, full-bodied delight with flavors of chocolate, caramel, coffee, some rich dark fruits, with a smooth dry finish and a nice coating mouthfeel.
Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. Chico, California
Celebration Ale 2008 6.8% ABV serving: pint $4.25
A reddish copper colored Fall Seasonal pale ale, or is it an IPA... The aroma has caramel malt, fruit and HOPS. The malt gives enough backbone to support the intense hop levels. This is always a fall favorite!
Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. Chico, California
Wet Hop Harvest 6.2% ABV serving: pint $4.5
This is one of the freshest draught products available. This American pale ale is a deep amber color and produces a nice, thick head. The Cascade hops are noticeable in the aroma and on the palate. The hops are picked fresh and sent to the brewery the same day as 'wet hops' (meaning fresh, not dried or processed). 110 pounds of fresh, whole hops go into each batch. Medium body and good malt character witha perfect hop snap at the finish.
In Bottles-
Meantime Brewing Company, ltd. London, England
London Porter 6.8% ABV serving: 750 mL bottle $18.
This recipe, dating back to 1750, uses no less than 7 types of malt. Light roasted malt on the nose, with a sweet caramel start that finishes with a mouthfeel of a smokey, dry malt astringency from the use of brown, black, and chocolate malts. Some of the spice in the body is derived from the copious amounts of British Fuggles hops tha go into London Porter. Called a "meal-on-its-own" beer, London Porter is, as the late great Micheal Jackson, Beer Hunter, said, great to have "with breakfast. But not for Breakfast!"
New Belgium Brewing Company Fort Collins, Colorado
1554 5.2% ABV serving: 12 oz bottle $4.5
Other than being dark in color, 1554 has little in common with porters or stouts. The beer is fermented at relatively high temperatures using a European lager yeast that imparts a refreshing, zesty acidity. Chocolate and coffee tones give way to a surprisingly clean finish.
Boston Beer Company (Samuel Adams) Boston, Massachusetts
Chocolate Bock 5.6% ABV serving: 750 mL bottle $22.
This Sam Adams special holiday offering pours a deep ruby brown witha light tan head. The aroma is of chocolate and a bit of sweet toffee over a lighter bodied beer than you would expect. Flavor is definitely of the darker chocolate variety, mixed with a very sweet malt. The finish is sweet, yet surprisingly dry. Chocolate Bock is aged on a bed of wild cocoa nibs harvested from the rainforest of Northern Bolivia which are said to impart flavors and aromas of chocolate, honey, and vanilla in the beer. This special release comes in a limited edition bottle with faux pewter labeling. *LIMITED QUANTINTY*
Samuel Smith Brewing Company Tadcaster, North Yorkshire, England
Winter Welcome 2008 6.0% ABV serving: 12 oz bottle $4.75
Throughout history, beer of somewhat higher alcoholic strength and richness has been enjoyed for the holidays, when old friends get together to enjoy the season. Wassail, a festival to celebrate winter, and the beer that goes with it, predates the Christian era. Winter Welcome is vintage-dated with a special label each year, along with a quote from Shakespeare himself : "Blessing of your heart, you brew good ale." Serve this beer in a traditional tankard for the holidays, and forget the egg nog; Sam Smith's got you covered! |
